Caring for Your Precious Rings

Caring for Your Precious Rings

Expert advice to keep your wedding, engagement and eternity rings looking beautiful for years to come.

Your jewellery is designed to be treasured for a lifetime. With a little care and attention, your precious rings can continue to look beautiful for many years.

At Duo Jewellery, we want you to enjoy wearing your rings every day, so we’ve put together some helpful advice on caring for your jewellery.

Everyday Wear & Scratches

All precious metals, including gold, platinum and palladium, will naturally develop fine scratches through everyday wear.

Even simple activities such as handling keys, opening doors or working at a desk can cause small surface marks.

This is completely normal and does not mean your ring is faulty.

Over time, these fine scratches often blend together, creating a softer, more natural finish known as a patina.

Rings can be professionally polished when required, although repeated polishing should be kept to a minimum as it removes a small amount of metal.

Caring for White Gold & Rhodium Plating

White gold jewellery is often finished with rhodium plating to create a bright, reflective white appearance.

Over time, this plating naturally wears away, revealing the slightly warmer tone of the white gold underneath.

This is normal and will vary depending on how frequently your ring is worn and your daily activities.

Your white gold ring can be professionally cleaned, polished and re-plated to restore its bright white appearance.

When Should You Remove Your Rings?

We recommend removing your rings during activities that could cause unnecessary damage.

* Gardening, DIY and heavy manual work
* Weightlifting and gym activities involving equipment
* Swimming and using hot tubs
* Cleaning with household chemicals
* Activities involving abrasive materials such as sand
* Applying lotions, creams or beauty products

Always store your rings somewhere safe when removed.

Important: Avoid wearing rings when working with machinery, as they can catch and cause injury.

Keeping Your Rings Clean

Regular gentle cleaning helps maintain the sparkle of your jewellery.

For suitable gold or platinum rings with securely set diamonds:

1. Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and a few drops of mild washing-up liquid.
2. Allow your ring to soak briefly.
3. Gently clean around the setting with a very soft toothbrush.
4. Rinse carefully in a separate bowl of clean water.
5. Dry using a soft, lint-free cloth.

Never use abrasive cleaning products, harsh chemicals or stiff brushes.

Some gemstones, finishes and ring designs require specialist care. If you are unsure whether your ring is suitable for home cleaning, please contact us first.

Caring for Diamond-Set Rings

Although diamonds are extremely hard, their settings can still become damaged through everyday wear.

We recommend:

* Avoiding knocks and impacts
* Removing diamond rings during heavy activities
* Checking regularly for loose or moving stones
* Having settings professionally inspected periodically

If you notice a loose diamond or damaged claw, stop wearing your ring and contact Duo Jewellery for advice.

Professional Jewellery Maintenance

Over time, your rings may benefit from professional cleaning, polishing or maintenance.

White gold rings may require rhodium re-plating, while diamond-set rings should have their settings checked when necessary.
